Challenge

Redefining Success in the Planning Profession

What is The Planning Challenge?
The Planning Challenge is a bold new initiative that aims to transform how we implement and measure success in the planning profession. The Challenge invites communities and planning practitioners—especially those in the public sector—to track the progress of their adopted plans through a shared dashboard platform. With many communities already engaged, this movement is gaining momentum.

Why Join The Planning Challenge?

  1. Accountability in Action
Signatories commit to publicly tracking the implementation of adopted plans—transportation, climate equity, resiliency, comprehensive, downtown master plans, campus plans, and more—through a shared Dashboard Platform.
  2. Power Through Partnership
The Challenge unites public agencies, private-sector firms, academia, and professional organizations. By working together, these partners ensure plans are not only created—but tracked, measured, and improved in practice.
  3. Transparency That Builds Trust
Sharing what’s working—and what isn’t—creates a powerful feedback loop that supports innovation and fosters a community of practice across jurisdictions.
  4. Invest in the Future of Planning
Sponsors ($750/year) support internship opportunities for young professionals, linking Planning Professional Organizations, Academia, and Local Governments to strengthen capacity and cultivate emerging talent.
  5. A New Culture of Planning Practice
The Planning Challenge is more than tracking goals—it’s about embedding a culture of accountability, collaboration, and measurable success into the DNA of our profession.

It’s time for a change!! This Planning Challenge lays the foundation for a culture of shared success in tackling the most pressing issues of our time: climate change, infrastructure resilience, and social equity. The live Dashboard Platform is a space where planners—especially in small and rural communities—can collaborate, access recommendations, and share what works (and what doesn’t). This Challenge is more than a tool; it’s a call to uplift and amplify community progress. Let’s make progress visible—and actionable! Connect with us at info@planningcommitment.org to get involved.
