PLANNING2050 is a multidisciplinary effort supported by various professional organizations. As a systems thinking approach overlaps diverse perspectives, PLANNING2050 successfully brings together various disciplines to help solving important problems.
“There’s a humility that comes with aspiring to meet huge challenges like climate change and social injustice through the design of the built environment. We know we cannot be as effective alone as we can be in collaboration with other associations, disciplines, perspectives and ways of thinking. I believe AIA is as well positioned to understand and respond to that fact as we have ever been.”
Dan Hart, President | AIA, 2022
“The intersecting challenges of equity and climate crisis require us to think anew and act anew. Planning 2050 is about adapting timeless ways of building great communities to the realities of a rapidly changing world. The Congress for the New Urbanism is committed to working with the APA, AIA and other critical partners to forge a bold vision for meeting the moment of danger and opportunity for America’s towns, cities and regions. Our shared goal is to create resilient cities that work for everyone.”
Rick Cole, Executive Director | CNU, 2022
“The Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure is proud to support Planning 2050 as a multidisciplinary forum that integrates every aspect of our built environment. Integrated, innovative, and long-term planning is at the heart of addressing the serious issues facing our planet. We are at a critical moment in history and our collective future will depend on our ability to work collaboratively toward a common cause.”
Anthony O. Kane, President & CEO | Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure
Every single entity affiliated with the built environment will have an important mission to address the current pressures of globalisation and urbanisation, threats to sustainability and food security, hazards derived from climate change and sea level rise, the burdens of modern living on our health and wellbeing, social justice, and more recently, the pressures resulting from the COVID-19 global pandemic. These issues require IFLA to work alongside partners such as Planning2050 to focus on establishing a joint landscape architectural vision for protecting and nurturing our natural and built environments.
Dr Bruno Marques, President | International Federation of Landscape Architects, 2023
“In this precise historical moment that we are experiencing, basing decisions on good urban and territorial planning is fundamental. The ecological transition must bring to synthesis the best of our contents. The search for sustainable development, the construction of strategies that favor the resilience of cities and territories, the application of participatory and inclusive approaches must always be put in front of each of our professional and research tasks.“
Pietro Elisei, President | ISOCARP, 2022
“The APA Sustainable Communities Division is an enthusiastic supporter and partner of the Planning2050 initiative. Our division’s mission is to support planners in creating sustainable, resilient, and equitable communities. The educational opportunities, tools and resources we provide planners help them to innovatively address the evolving ecological, social, and economic factors that shape our communities, especially climate change and equity. The Planning2050 framework will provide data-driven, replicable, and scalable solutions that planners can implement to address the most urgent built environment issues of our time.”
Merrill St. Leger, Chair, Sustainable Communities Division | APA, 2022
“By 2050 an extra 2.5 billion people will be living in towns and cities globally. Social equity, climate action, and resiliency must be front and centre in planning for sustainable development and accommodating this extraordinary growth. The challenges professional planners face today are complex and interwoven within globally connected systems. The 2050 Commitment is an important initiative that is bringing Planners and other professionals together to align strategies, to develop data-driven solutions, and to be a resource for replicable and scalable solutions. The Commonwealth Association of Planners believes this important work will assist all of us in moving forward together. “
Eleanor Mohammed, President | Commonwealth Association of Planners. 2022
Since 2021, a group of planners – among other professionals of the built environment- have gathered to define the structure, and goals of PLANNING2050. This group originated from the Climate Champions Program, within the Sustainable Communities Division (SCD) of the American Planning Association (APA).
